Overall I’m pleased with my reading in 2012. I read some great books, and read a lot in some of my favorite areas (memoirs especially).
As I reviewed my list of books, I was struck by some of the lighter, genre fiction that I read. I’d say that I read too much of that, except that I know that virtually all of it was done via ebooks and in pockets of time that don’t lend themselves to deeper reading. So almost all of that reading was done during times that I would otherwise have read nothing at all, which doesn’t feel quite as bad as it would otherwise. I’ve also figured out a more efficient way to find books I can read on my kindle so I’m hoping in 2013 I’ll have higher quality ereads as well.
My list of board and picture books isn’t complete. I wasn’t always great about recording the books we borrowed from the library, and hope to improve on that this year. I like keeping track of them so I remember what we’ve already borrowed, and so that when I’m trying to remember “what was the name of that book we read that my kids loved so much?” I have a better chance to figure it out.
An asterisk (*) by a title means it’s one I especially enjoyed or recommend.

I’m so thankful you started this blog… your recommendations keep giving me great suggestions. And I’m so glad I started recording my reading on Goodreads!
Thanks Elizabeth! And I’d eventually like to hear more about your take on Goodreads, since I do feel like I was so enthusiastic about using it.
Wow, I’m blown away by how many books you read in a year. I enjoy your reviews very much!
Thank you! I’m very glad to hear that – I’ve hoped that they’ll be useful.
Whoa, you read a lot of parenting books! I’ve read 1 ever.
And I was just thinking I might start a separate Goodreads list for books I read to Eleanor – because like you, I sometimes forget what we’ve read.
What’s funny to me is that I didn’t think I’d read a lot, until compiling them. Most of them were read the first half of the year and apparently I forgot about them. Plus I read all of the potty training books one after the other, and if you lump them together then the total doesn’t seem so ridiculous. I was just really dreading potty training and seemed to think if I read everything I could find on it it might make it easier.
And then several of them kind of tilt towards the parenting-memoir side of things which I really enjoy more than the true “this is how you should do it” realm, which I tend to skim.
Like “Loving the Little Years.” I included it in parenting, because it is, but it’s also got a lot of memoir qualities, as well as Christian living aspects. And I adored it.
Awesome {impressive!!} list. Thank you for posting this, Sheila. I will definitely be coming back to it…
Thanks Katie!
Wow! Bravo! I saw several on your list that you starred that I’ve read and several new ones I can’t wait to try
I hope you find some that you like!
